Baabaas all set for season kickoff

By Jonathan Leask  March 19 2010

This weekend rugby league fans won't just have to settle for the NRL action on television.

BarbariansSCThe Ashburton Barbarians play their first home game at the Allenton rugby grounds against the Timaru Warriors tomorrow, giving local league fans their first chance in many years to see live league action.

The game will kick off at 1pm, and if there last outing is anything to go by there is bound to be some bone-jarring hits and fancy footwork.

The Barbarians side had its first hit out against a strong Burnham division one side two weeks ago, and will be looking to build on that performance this weekend as it heads towards it inaugural season in the Christchurch com-petition.

The team was greeted with a large supporting crowd to its first game and is hoping for more of the same, if not a bigger crowd at kickoff to its first home game.

"We had a massive crowd up at Burnham, we had more supporters than they did.

"Hopefully we can match that or even get a few more down to watch," club president Zinzan Smith said.
