| Burnside takes out close encounter of the College kind |
|
By Jonathan Leask March 17 2010 A day of mixed results saw Burnside come out on top of Ashburton College In the annual exchange yesterday. On a day where the number of close games was equally matched by one sided results it was Burnside that won nine fixtures to Ashburton College's seven, with only the two day 1st Xi match result still to be decided. The Ashburton College junior tennis squad proved far too strong, taking out its fixture 9-3. Away at Burnside the senior team scraped out a 6-5 result to be the only sport the college recorded a clean sweep, other than the single lawn bowls match. The bowls pair of Mathew Bassett and William Datlen had a strong finish to claim a 21-8 win at the Allenton bowling green. After some close early ends the Ashburton pair proved far too accurate and outplayed their opponents. With the boys' 1st XI still with one day to play in its two day match it was up to the 2nd XI, juniors and the girls. The girls first XI prepared for their club cricket final with a demolition of its Burnside opponents. The girls dismissed Burnside for a mere 44 runs which they chased down in no time taking just nine overs to record the win. The junior boys also bowled Burnside out rather cheaply having the visitors all out for 73. In reply Ashburton made light work of the chase to be 76/2 to take the win. The boys 2nd XI had a tough tussle on its hands but fell victim to its hosts, losing by just two wickets. The touch sides travelled to Burn-side, with the home team well and truly dominating on the field. Ashburton won only one of the six matches, taking out the senior mixed match 3-2. The junior boys went close suffering a 3-2 scoreline while the junior girls' side was on the wrong side of a big loss. The mixed junior A side went down 5-3 and mixed B lost 7-4. The College chess teams had differing days with the A team going down 9-7 while the B team had a dominant 12-4 result. The volleyball on the other hand saw two landslide victories to Burnside as they won both the boys' and girls encounters 3-0.
